Habanero Creates New Face for MEC's Mountain of Information

Habanero Consulting Group (Habanero), a leading Internet consulting services company, has redesigned Mountain Equipment Co-op's eCommerce website, www.mec.ca.

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), Canada's leading retail co-operative, is known for the wealth of product and activity information it provides to its members. The former website was popular but showing its age and required an update. In addition, the extent of gear and activity information available on the site was not easily accessed and consequently largely unknown to members.

To maximize the new site's usability, Habanero leveraged its relationship with The New Media Innovation Centre (NewMIC). NewMIC is an industry-university-government collaboration focused on new media innovation. By utilizing NewMIC's Human Centred Design lab, Habanero was able to provide more sophisticated usability testing and reporting.

One of the most exciting things about MEC is the amazing amount of knowledge and advice they offer," said Ben Skelton, Habanero's creative director. "A ton of information was available on the old site but it was difficult to find. Our human-centered information architecture and design process, along with usability testing at the NewMIC facility allowed us to create a site that is both attractive and incredibly easy to use."

"Habanero consistently exceeded our expectations throughout this project," said Peter ter Weeme, MEC's Senior Manager of Communications and Marketing. "We've received very positive feedback about the site's new look and feel. The easy access to product and activity information further distinguishes us from other outdoor retailers."
