Notes

  1. An empty cell mean this Windows/SharePoint combination is not supported.
  2. This table reflects all SharePoint editions, i.e. WSS/Foundation and Server Standard/Enterprise/Internet Sites. In other words within a SharePoint version, the Windows requirements are the same.
  3. I've indicated if a minimum Windows or SharePoint Service Pack is required otherwise assume RTM and later.
  4. The documentation isn't always complete - when specific editions are not provided, I've used the phrase Edition not provided . The best bet is the editions are the same as another supported Windows version.
  5. Windows Web Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 Web edition can't run a full SQL edition; There are two options: use SQL Express/MSDE or install SQL Server on a dedicated server with an appropriate Windows edition.
  6. SharePoint 2010 can be installed onto a computer running Windows Vista or Windows 7. This is not supported for production, but is supported for development. You need to install SharePoint using setup.exe and a config.xml file with the AllowWindowsClientInstall setting. For more information on the whole process see Setting Up the Development Environment for SharePoint 2010 on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 .
  7. Why have I listed unsupported versions of SharePoint? One day you'll encounter one of these ancient farms in need of some help and the answer will become obvious.
